Facet Joint Problems and Symptoms
By Debra Rodzinak
The facet joint is the part of the spine that provides stability. Many people find that due to a quick movement or repetitive movement over time, the support offered by the facet joint is missing in certain parts of the spine. This leads to inflammation followed by the degeneration of the joint which leads to friction of the spinal bones (vertebrae).
The pain caused by this type of wear and tear leads to terrible pain. When a person experiences this type of back pain, they are hesitant to move too much and the flexibility of the spine decreases over time.
Symptoms of Facet Joint Problems
- Pain in the lower back that occurs first thing in the morning or later in the day
- Similar pain and stiffness close to the tailbone or at the pelvis
- A decrease in the amount of pain after moving around
- Lower back pain that travels to the thighs, buttocks, or pelvis
Due to the extensive pain associated with a facet joint injury, the pain can mimic the pain of a herniated disc. Pain can also seem like a deep infection, fracture, torn muscle, or even present in the abdomen. This can be very frightening to those who experience this unknown source of pain.
Relief from Facet Joint Problems
When someone has been diagnosed with facet joint problems, relief may seem unattainable due to the expense of CT scans, MRIs, or X-rays. However, many chiropractic treatments help patients who suffer with facet joint pain find relief.
Episodes of facet joint back pain can recur to the point where a patient feels that there is no rhyme or reason for an attack. When the facet joint is in the lumbar (lower back) region, the pain may be felt, not when standing, but while sitting or riding.
The muscle spasms that occur with this particular type of facet joint problem are particularly problematic because it is impossible not to sit down at some point during the day. With the continual muscle spasms that occur, the muscles surrounding the spine become fatigued and the cycle repeats itself. Patients find a hard time finding relief. However, there is hope.
