Embracing the Outdoors May Improve Health

By Tom Herrin

Sometimes people need to simply make some kind of a change in their surroundings in order to affect their health.  Getting away from the demands of a job, family, finances, and all sorts of other things may do a lot.  Many times some of the greatest stresses come from those people place on themselves.  One of the simplest ways to make this change is to go camping.  It can be very low cost and may last anywhere from one night to weeks.  While many people camped out as kids, they may not have pursued it as adults.  It can be a good way to provide a boost for health, and make that change needed.

It May Be a Chance for Some Real Fresh Air

Most people spend the majority of their time indoors.  It has been said that in some places, pollutants can be two to five times as much indoors.  This is especially true for those who live in urban areas.  Getting outdoors and breathing some fresh air may seem simple enough, but the opportunity to actually breathe air that does not contain so much pollution can be a refreshing change to the system.

It May Help Improve Eyesight

Lots of people suffer from some degree of loss of good eyesight.  Myopia (nearsightedness) has appeared to be increasing in numbers of cases for several years.  Many people attributed the increase to viewing computer screens, or some similar electronic device.  A research group from Canada concluded that those who spent more time outdoors had lower rates of myopia.  There may be some health benefits from some exposure to UV rays.  It may help in normal development of the eyes in children.

It May Help Reduce Stress

Stress is something that seems to creep up on all of us at one time or another.  Finding some way to deal with it can make life more pleasant.  A change of scenery can be a great start.  When you go camping, you not only change your setting but also have more opportunities to get out and move around.  It is hard to resist the temptation to explore and take small walks.  You may naturally change your routine as the sun comes up while there is no way of blocking it out with artificial light and a closed room.  You will likely be pleasantly surprised by the new outlook.
