Avoid Illness This Winter

It’s happening whether you want it to or not – winter. Yes, the leaves are now taking their famous plunge and Old Man Winter is waiting to make his entrance. Right along with him are his friends Uncle Flu and Cousin Cold. One of the most popular questions for chiropractors this time of year is how to avoid falling ill this winter. Well, it’s easier than you might think. There are some common sense solutions to helping avoid illness this winter – read on to find out!

Avoid People Who Are Ill

This may not always be possible, but if you know that someone is ill, don’t go visit them. Sick people carry active germs that can easily infect you, so it stands to reason the less time you can spend with sick people the less your chance of becoming one of them. Birds of a feather and all that.

Wash Your Paws

If you had to pick just one thing to do all winter long to avoid illness it should be this – wash your hands! Sick people with contagious illnesses touch the same surfaces as you all day long, so washing your hands before you eat and avoiding touching your nose, mouth, and eyes over the course of the day are great strategies to help you stay healthy.

Get Some Sleep

Your body uses the time you’re asleep to rest and rejuvenate, so if you’re not getting enough sleep at night then your body isn’t functioning optimally, utilizing the opportunity to repair and strengthen itself. You should be getting about eight hours of sleep a night as an adult.

Reduce Your Alcohol Intake

Just say no to that last cup of eggnog this holiday season. Lest you lower your immune function and spend the night before Christmas sniffling and sneezing instead of opening presents and baking cookies! When you imbibe too much alcohol, then you are forcing your body to metabolize it, meaning it has to use its resources to rid your system of it – resources better used to fight off infection.

This goes without saying, but you’re going to hear it anyway – get your winter-loving behind into the chiropractor!
