Why Working Out in Water is Better for the Body

By Brandi Swieter

Water aerobics does well as a class because countless people are starting to realize its benefits. Working out in water is much better for the body due to the pressure it takes off the joints. Both men and women, as well as people young and old, can enjoy a workout in the water and increase their flexibility.

A Natural Resistance

Many athletes add extra weight to gain a resistance factor that will improve their workouts. This unnatural element has people pushing and pulling against gravity. It can be very taxing on the muscles. Water provides a natural resistance without the need for extra weights.

Improving Muscle Strength Quickly

Resistance in the pool is many times greater than in the air. This fact means people in the water get in a better workout, and can improve their muscle strength much more quickly. Flexibility and agility get increased as well. It helps to build up a high level of endurance so more can be handled session after session.

Low-Impact

People put a lot of impact on their bodies when they work out on land. The buoyancy of water limits this amount, thus providing a low-impact workout that does not leave the body feeling rundown and overworked. Running on land puts much more pressure on the joints than running in the water, yet the runner still receives an adequate workout. Men and women who suffer from back problems, joint conditions, or other physical ailments that prevent them from exercising in a normal capacity can benefit greatly from water exercises.

Lowering Blood Pressure

Different types of pain felt in the body often stems from a circulatory issue. People who have high blood pressure tend to have blood circulation issues as well. Chiropractors can perform an adjustment that improves circulation, but working out in the water helps as well. Moving in the water helps the blood to flow through the body more freely, thus lowering blood pressure and improving circulatory issues. A drop in blood pressure also ensures the heart can work less. It remains productive in its efforts without having to feel any added stress of unnecessary pumping.

Find a local water aerobics class and sign up. There are many great benefits to working out in the water, and it is better on the body than exercising on land. Use the natural resistance it provides to your advantage.
