Many people are destined to experience lower back pain at some point in their lives. This pain may be due to an injury or a health condition, or it may just pop up out of nowhere leaving you to scratch your head about how you made it into the esteemed ranks of the 80 percent of Americans who will experience back pain this year. If your lower back hurts and you’re not really sure why, these may be a few of the reasons you’ve not thought of yet!
Big Concerns
There are times when you’re experiencing back pain that can indicate a bigger problem than you may realize. This is why it’s so important to not just grin and bear it, but to see your chiropractor for an evaluation. They may ask you the following questions about your back pain in order to rule out anything potentially serious:
- Do you still have bladder and bowel control? – Sometimes loss of these functions can indicate a severely pinched nerve and that should be dealt with right away.
- Do you have a fever? – If you’ve had any recent infections they will want to rule out a spinal infection.
- Do you have a family history of cancer? – If you’ve had weight loss you can’t explain or low back pain that doesn’t go away, it could be a sign of a more serious condition, especially if you have a family history of cancer.
Surprising Reasons Behind Back Pain
If you’re experiencing back pain and more serious concerns have been ruled out, these common but relatively unknown causes may be why:
- You’re depressed – If you’re depressed, it may make it more difficult for you to cope with pain. Depression also makes people feel as if they have no energy, and being sedentary can cause back pain too.
- How you use your phone – Yes, your phone could be the culprit! If you often hold your phone between your ear and your shoulder or you look down at your phone for long periods it might be why you’re experiencing pain.
- Your feet ache or hurt – If your feet are bothering you, then it may cause you to walk with an altered gait, and that altered gait can be the foundation of pain from your feet up to your lower back!
- Weakened abdominal muscles – if you don’t have a strong core, it can be causing back pain since your back has to hold the load without help.
- Tight hamstrings – If you have shortened and tight muscles such as hamstrings or hip rotators, then it can cause your pelvis to tilt and that can lead to cause back pain!
