Be an Expert in Anything but Poor Lifestyle Choices
By Donna Stark
Chiropractors have long been known as the “go-to experts” for back pain, but during the course of their careers, they have also become experts of something else ... poor lifestyle choices. On any given day, they may have a number of patients come in seeking pain relief, and many of these cases are caused by unhealthy lifestyle choices. From sore backs, necks, and shoulders, to advanced stress levels, compromised immune systems, and irregular sleep patterns, chiropractors have seen it all. So much of it is unnecessary, but the good news is that a lot of it is preventable.
Tips from the Experts
Your chiropractor at The Joint Chiropractic wants to talk to you about these lifestyle choices, they want to share their knowledge with you, but more importantly, they want to help your body function at the most efficient level possible. Here are some of their tips.
- Stop sitting and move - Of all the bad choices we can make out there, sitting seems relatively innocent, but that’s really not the case. Excessive, prolonged sitting has been associated with back pain, poor posture, and other spinal issues. It has also been linked to heart disease and diabetes as well. If you have a sedentary job, a long commute, or just like to binge watch television shows, make it a point to get up and move at least every 30 minutes or so. Take a short walk, stand while talking on the phone, or do some quick squats. The key is to just move.
- Stretch every day - As you age, your muscles become tighter and less flexible, increasing your chances of injury, so it’s important to incorporate stretching into your routine as much as possible. Focus on stretching your hamstrings, quadriceps, calves, hips, and back to avoid many of the common injuries that chiropractors treat on a daily basis. It only takes a few minutes each day, but it will give you a lifetime of benefits.
- Don’t ignore pain - Another important lifestyle tip is to seek help and get quick treatment if you’ve suffered an injury or are experiencing pain. What may seem like a minor annoyance now can lead to years of pain and discomfort in the future. In addition to that, avoidance can potentially cause improper muscle and joint function, reduced mobility, and unnecessary use of pain medications. So don’t ignore the messages that your body is trying to send you, and seek help as soon as possible.
