Self-Care Tips for the Busy Parent

By Donna Stark

You are the first one awake and the last one to bed. Your days are filled with one thing after the next and those things have little to do with what you really enjoy. You have a family, you have a career, and you have multiple responsibilities with multiple organizations in your community, but what you don't have is time for yourself. You are doing it all and unfortunately, if you aren't already, you will end up suffering from it.

Self-Care for the Busy Parent

Our lives are getting busier and busier as the years pass and as a result, the health and wellness of many parents are getting pushed to the side. Well, it's time to change that way of life and honestly, it really couldn't be any easier! If you are a parent and are running yourself ragged, take a look at some simple self-care strategies that can be incorporated into the busiest of days.

Rest and Relaxation

Since when did rest and relaxation become something of an indulgence? Our bodies require rest and it isn't anything you should feel guilty about doing. When you take the time to rest during the day and you prioritize your sleep, you are allowing your body to repair and recharge itself. So, make sure you schedule those breaks (they only need to be a few minutes at a time) and get the recommended amount of sleep each night. Your body will thank you for it!

Diet and Hydration

When your busy lifestyle mandates quick and easy meals, you may not be fueling your body with the proper amount of nutrition it needs. Make sure you are starting your days with a healthy and satisfying breakfast. Take an extra few minutes while packing everyone else's lunch and bag something up for you too! And by all means, stay away from processed and fast foods. Your diet should be filled with lean proteins, fruit, vegetables, whole grains, heart-healthy fats, and plenty of water.

Exercise and Fitness

Come on, you can do it. You can find at least 30 minutes a day to engage in some sort of moderate physical activity, can't you? After all, your body depends on it and there are a lot of people depending on your body! So head outside for a walk, go for a swim, or pull up one of the online workout videos. You will notice a difference in how you feel almost immediately.

A Healthier Life

Parenting is one of the most rewarding jobs there is, but that doesn't mean it is easy. Everyone wants a piece of you but you can't take care of your loved ones without taking care of yourself first! So start prioritizing your health today and don't feel an ounce of guilt for doing so!
