Are You Ready for the Next Storm?
By Donna Stark
There are a lot of things brewing and no, it's not that pot of coffee you just put on. It's the drop in temperature and the frightful weather heading your way. And even though the sky may be bright and sunny right now, it won't be like that for long. So, the question to ask is ... are you ready? Are you ready for the winds, snow, sleet, and ice? Are you prepared to keep your loved ones safe and protected? If you aren't sure, you may want to take a look at the following suggestions.
Stock up on Necessities
If you live in an area that is known for shutdowns, power outages, and closed roads, you need to prepare ahead of time. Waiting until the last second to grab what you need could leave you with empty hands at the end of the day. Here are some items to put on your shopping list if you don't already have them.
- Flashlights and fresh batteries
- Candles and matches
- Solar chargers and a generator (don't forget the gas or propane)
- Bottled water and ready-to-eat food
- Manual can opener and paper products
- First aid supplies and medications
- Shovels and salt
Take Inventory of Apparel
You should always check your winter gear before the season arrives. Make sure everything still fits, that there aren't any broken zippers, that each glove has a matching pair, and that your boots are in good shape. You need to do this in case you do have to clear the snow or deal with some kind of emergency outdoors. It's also good to make sure you have plenty of blankets in both your home and car during the winter.
Have a Backup Plan
It's always better to think of the worst and then to plan on keeping that from happening. So, if your health isn't that great or if your physical condition limits your actions, it would be wise to have someone lined up ahead of time to clear your snow or to drive you to your appointments. Remember, the best time to plan for bad weather is when the weather is actually good so head outdoors and talk to your neighbors. You may be surprised by how helpful people truly are.
Getting Through the Storm
Being overprepared is a much better position to be in than being underprepared, so start planning today! Your family is counting on you and chances are, those storms will hit sooner than you think!
