Why You Should Eat More Fish

By Sara Butler

Fish is good for you, there's simply no other way to say it. There are several benefits to your health that eating fish regularly brings with it, but many people don't eat enough stuff from the sea on a regular basis to reap these benefits.

If you need convincing to have more fish on your dish, then here are just a few of the ways that fish can help to support your health. Who knows? You may be inspired to eat more of it once you see what it can do for you.

Reduce Chance of Heart Disease

According to the National Institutes of Health, heart disease is the number one killer in the United States. But studies done in other countries where people tend to eat more fish in their diets have found that having two servings or more of oily fish per week reduced the chances of having a stroke or heart attack.

Apparently, the omega-3 fatty acids found in fatty, oily fish helps to reduce your chances of experiencing what is called a cardiac episode. That's why the American Heart Association suggests that people eat two services of fish each week. Sardines, tuna, trout, or salmon are the best for your heart.

Increase Your Brain Health

It's not simply the heart that benefits from increased fish intake, but the brain, too. Studies have found that those with higher levels of omega-3 fatty acids in their blood because they eat the recommended number of servings of fish per week had healthier brains. The reason is that the fatty acids help to reduce overall inflammation, which can become a factor in the brain as you age.

You can improve your memory and cognition by simply eating fish a couple of times per week. Seems like a good argument for a tuna fish sandwich!

Better Sleep

Sleep is something that many people struggle to get enough of - and the quality of what they do get may be lacking. Salmon may be able to help you get some quality shut-eye, as the vitamins such as DHA and Vitamin D in sleep may help to improve how high quality your sleep is as well as how much you get of it.

Fish is good for you, so eat more of it to reap the benefits!
