Too Hot to Sleep? Try This!
By Brandi Goodman
Sleep can be hard to come by when the hot summer weather keeps you tossing and turning throughout the night. But you need sleep if you have any hope of maintaining your health and keeping your stress levels low. If you're too hot to sleep at night, try out some of these options and see if you can get some better rest.
Avoid Alcohol
A summer cocktail can feel like a good choice when you want to unwind. It isn't ideal on a hot summer night, however. Alcohol can actually cause your body's core temperature to rise. You may notice you start to sweat and feel a bit warm when you're drinking. Doing so so close to bedtime can cause you to be too hot to fall asleep. It can also interrupt your sleep patterns once you've managed to doze off.
Use Room-Darkening Curtains
The sun stays out later during the summer months. This not only brings in light as you're trying to sleep some nights, but it can also keep the heat coming through. Use room-darkening curtains to cover your bedroom windows so less heat and light make their way in. You may find it easier to sleep if you do so.
Sleep With a Sheet
Some people struggle to sleep without some sort of blanket over them. Rather than using a thick comforter, though, you should really try to sleep with just a thin sheet. It will provide you with some level of comfort that you get from being covered, yet won't add too much heat to your body. You can even spritz the sheet with a bit of water if you want to help yourself feel cooler as you try to rest.
Buy Moisture-Wicking Pajamas
When you're sweating at night as you try to sleep, it can be hard to get comfortable enough to really rest. Buy some moisture-wicking pajamas that help to pull moisture away from your skin and keep you feeling more comfortable. You'll be more likely to drift off when you aren't drenched in sweat.
Your well-being depends on the amount of sleep you get. Too little and you'll quickly succumb to the stress and anxiety that comes when you've gotten no rest. It's also easier to fall ill when your body is not well-rested like it needs to be. Try out some of these options when it's too hot to sleep and see how much better a night's rest can be.
