How and Why Vitamin D Can Change Your Life for the Better

Vitamin D is a vitamin that you don’t hear just a whole lot about. When I was young, I heard it in Sunny D commercials. As an adult, I hear it reference to the sun...and that’s about it. It is said that we definitely need this healthy vitamin, but we are not generally told how much, where to get it, or what happens when we don’t get enough. In truth, however, Vitamin D is a pretty big deal! Read on to see how this simple little Vitamin can change your life for the better.

What Does Vitamin D Do?

Vitamin D actually does quite a bit in the body. For starters, it promotes healthy bones. Vitamin D helps the body to absorb Calcium, which is essential for healthy and strong bones. It also encourages normal cell growth, boosts the immune system, and reduces inflammation in the body. It goes a long way in keeping you healthy and fighting off foreign bodies and illness. Lastly, it can promote healthy brain function. It is thought that Vitamin D helps neurotransmitters in the brain to stay healthy and efficient in function.

What Happens When We Don’t Get Enough?

When we don’t get enough of this vitamin, some negative side effects can come about. You may notice that your bones ache or become brittle. Along with this, you may feel unwell or be in general pain. The pain may come out of nowhere or seem to have no other cause. You may also find that you feel down. A lack of Vitamin D has been linked to depression. So, if you are feeling blue, and also suffer from generic aches and pains, it might be time to get your Vitamin D levels checked.

Where Can I Get Vitamin D?

Vitamin D is not naturally present in very many foods. Look to fish like salmon and mackerel, dairy like yogurt and whole milk, or breakfast items like egg yolk or orange juice. These foods are among the very few that contain any traceable levels of Vitamin D. It can also be beneficial to get safely in the sun. The sun’s rays can give your body a nice healthy blast of Vitamin D. Just make sure that you wear sunscreen to keep yourself protected. Of course, another option is to use a supplement. In fact, if a Vitamin D deficiency is found, this is the route that most doctors take to get you back on track.

You may not have realized just how important this little vitamin really is to your overall health. Vitamin D may not be as heavily promoted or advertised as other vitamins, but it is certainly just as important. Get your daily dose of Vitamin D to stay healthy and happy for years to come.
