Mental Health Tips That Are Actually Fun

Mental health gets a lot of attention these days. The advice is abundant. When you’re looking for ways to protect your mental health, you’re likely to hear advice such as: See a therapist. Get offline. Get some exercise. All of these are excellent suggestions for bettering your mental health, but they’re also hard. It’s difficult to break out of our normal habits. To make it a little easier, check out these three mental health tips that not only work, but are a lot of fun to boot.

Take a Vacation ... Regularly

Who doesn’t love a good vacation? The beach, the mountains, a camping trip. A little time off in someplace new can go a really long way. It helps us unwind and recharge. For our mental health, regular vacations can eliminate stress and give us the chance to start over. As an American adult, chances are good that you’re skipping your vacation days in lieu of more work. Don’t. Take time off, have some fun, and protect your mental well-being.

Go Out With Friends

We’re all so lonely these days despite the fact that we have more “friends” than ever. For the sake of your mental health, assume that your online friends don’t even count. Instead, get a few of your real friends together at least once a week and go out! Get coffee or drinks, sit and laugh, and enjoy each other’s company. The real physical contact is what we all need to protect our mental health for a lifetime.

Add Some Spontaneity

While some consistency is definitely good for you, we all need a little spontaneity as well. We need to be able to just … go. Try adding a few moments of spontaneity to your life -- and it doesn’t have to mean a cross country trip or backpacking across Europe. When you get the whim for an ice cream sundae at midnight, go! Feel like taking the afternoon off and checking out that new museum exhibit? Do it! A little unpredictability may be just what you need to restart your motor and get a better grip on life.

When it comes to mental health, don’t ignore the traditional advice. It’s solid information, and you’ll feel better if you heed it. But don’t skip out on the fun parts of life either. Use these tips to protect your mental health and have some fun all at the same time.
