4 Chiropractic Tips for Parents
By Brandi Goodman
Whether you're a new parent or have been doing the thing for a while, there are still some tips that can help you. Parenting is a hard job that can be even harder on your body. All the back pain, headaches, and poor sleep is worth it for your sweet kiddos -- but what if you didn't have to deal with as many as those aches? With some chiropractic tips for parents, you can make it through without as much of the discomfort.
Change the Way You Carry the Car Seat
Too many parents lift their car seats incorrectly. You shouldn't be bending over at the waist to grab it, since this can hurt your back. You also shouldn't carry it over your arm, to the crook of your elbow. Your leg will hit against it as you walk -- not to mention the unevenness it causes for your body. Instead, put your arm through the handle hole and grab the back of the seat. It will keep it higher up on your body and allow you to carry the weight much more easily -- without hurting yourself.
Get a Height-Appropriate Changing Table
A changing table that sits low will require you to bend further. This will quickly lead to back pain. Make sure to get a height-appropriate changing table that sits higher than your waist. You want to be able to stand tall and get your changing duties accomplished without hurting yourself in the process.
Get an Adjustable Stroller
The height issue also applies to a stroller. You can't enjoy a walk with your toddler when you're struggling to push the stroller well. You shouldn't have to lean far down nor reach up to handle it. A stroller with an adjustable handlebar works well for two parents of different heights. You can raise or lower it to accommodate your size.
Perfect Your Playing Position
Chances are, you'll be on the ground and playing with your kids at their level. This can be uncomfortable for you if you're having to sit hunched over for a while. You need to perfect your playing position so you know you can play with your kids for an extended time and be able to get back up without feeling sore. You may need to sit on a pillow, lay on the ground, or move playtime somewhere you're able to sit more comfortably.
Parenting is already hard enough. Don't let some simple mistakes cause you pain in the process that makes it even tougher to get through your day. Keep these chiropractic tips in mind so you can keep your parenting as pain-free as possible.
