Having Healthy Fun With Fermented Foods
By Genevieve Cunningham
It’s possible that, unlike so many other health tips that are readily repeated among fitness circles, you have never even heard of fermented foods. And now that you’ve heard the term, you may be scrunching your nose in disgust! Fermented, seriously?! But in some wellness circles, fermented foods are all the rage. If you’re unsure about this slightly off-the-wall health food, take a look at all you need to know before diving in.
What are Fermented Foods?
Fermented foods are, quite literally, foods that have been through the fermentation process. Think foods such as sauerkraut, natural plain yogurt, and strong aged cheese. These kinds of foods are put through fermentation in order to create lactic acid and good bacteria. It’s thought that the process produces a wide range of nutrients including omega-3 fatty acids, various vitamins, and probiotics.
What are the Health Benefits?
Many people think of fermented foods and immediately scrunch their face in disgust. But once you get past the strong smell and sometimes stout flavor, many people learn to love these kinds of foods. The benefits are all centered around the good bacteria that is produced by fermentation. The gut needs good bacteria in order to function properly, and these foods help to keep that good bacteria lined in your intestines. People who are pro fermentation report benefits such as easier digestion, better absorption of nutrients from foods, and even a greater level of concentration.
Are They Worth It?
If you look at the health benefits, the answer would undoubtedly be yes. The downside? Fermentation is a process that can take days, weeks, or even months. Many people lack the knowledge, experience, and patience to make their own foods. If you’re interested, look for a local whole, natural food location near you. Or if you’re patient and keen on learning new things, pick one recipe and give it a try for yourself.
Fermented foods may or may not be for you, but don’t knock it until you try it. If you’re truly looking for a natural way to get as healthy as possible, leave no stone unturned, and even though it might sound a little different, fermented foods may be a stone worth discovering. Do your research, give it a try if you’re brave, and you may find another effective element to your healthy living lifestyle plan.
