3 Reasons Why Your Mental Health Needs a Lift

By Genevieve Cunningham

Mental health is a serious issue. In our modern world, it seems to be a bigger issue than ever before. We’re constantly bombarded with images and stories of people who are suffering from serious mental health problems. We’re constantly warned to be on the lookout for our own issues. But has anyone ever stopped to wonder why? While more awareness is certainly part of it, maybe our lifestyles are contributing to our decline in general mental wellness. If you feel as though your mental health may be suffering slightly, take a look at these reasons why it may be happening, followed by some tips for making it better.

Because We’re Too Plugged In

Technology is truly a good thing. It makes life easier in so many ways. It makes things faster and more streamlined. It makes connections to people and various locations possible. But there are definitely aspects of technology that are detrimental. For most people, technology also means constant access to social media. And social media is notorious for causing unnecessary comparisons and feelings of negativity about our own lives. There’s also the addiction aspect. Technology absolutely becomes addictive, and any sort of addiction brings negative mental health aspects to our lives. If you’re feeling down about yourself or your life, check your technology habits and make adjustments where needed.

Because We’re Too Busy

The society that we live in is a busy one. It seems as though we all feel like a busy life is a happy life. And though being busy can sometimes contribute to happiness, it can also contribute to negative feelings about everyday life. Stay involved and engaged in hobbies and activities. Stay connected to friends and family. Yes, be busy! But don’t be so busy that you don’t have any downtime. Don’t schedule every second of the day. Find a good balance between active and relaxed, and your mental health will likely see a significant rise.

Because We’re Too Stressed

We are stressed about everything. We’re all so busy trying to have and consume more, we’re driving ourselves crazy. We stress about health. We stress about finances. We stress about having the newest and hottest items on the market. Try incorporating a bit of simplicity into your life. Do you really need that brand new gadget? And at the same time, take plenty of time to allow yourself to unwind. Have you used your vacation days? Don’t let them go to waste! End some of the stress in your life, and your mental wellness will thank you in the long run.

Mental health is important, and you should absolutely treat it that way! Keep yourself in check by paying attention to the common, but damaging, aspects of life. With the right mindframe and some self-care, you can create a nourishing environment for yourself and protect your mental wellness for years to come.
