3 Reasons to Put Down the Phone for the Holidays
By Genevieve Cunningham
Phones. We're all addicted. We all spend hours and hours with the small device practically glued to our hands every day. When we're bored, we reach for the phone. When we can't sleep, we gab the phone. It's our go-to, our scheduler, our communication with the outside world. We have a hard time living without them. But for all of the good that phones bring into our lives, they also bring some bad. And because phones can bring harm to our overall health and well-being, it might be time to take a break. Sound too difficult? If you're addicted to your phone, take a look at these reasons to put it down during the holidays for a little break.
For Your Mental Health
Technology certainly has a lot of good qualities, but it can also be detrimental to your mental health. It forces us to stress ourselves over other people, other situations, other experiences. It exposes us to too much noise. Putting the phone down allows us to stop the noise and improve mental health. If you would like to go into the new year with your mental health in even better condition, taking a break from the phone is a good way to get started.
For Relationships
Relationships work best when people are able to spend time together face to face. Your grandparents will be happy to see you over the holidays, but they'll be even happier if they see you without a phone in your face! Your kids will be happier to spend time with you without distraction. Your friends and family deserve your attention. Put the phone down, give some respect, and your relationships will likely grow as a result.
For a Chance to Reset
Technology is draining. This is especially true when social media is involved, but any significant time spent behind a screen is draining to your wellness. Make the holidays a time to recharge and relax. This allows your body and mind and stress levels to reset. And since most people are off work over the holidays, this is a great time to get a reset. Use this time wisely, and you'll likely go back to work feeling refreshed and better than ever before.
Phones can be great tools for us to use in the modern world. And we should take advantage of their convenience! But we should also know when enough is enough. Use the holidays as a time to rest from your phone, and you may find some benefits to your health and life that you haven't seen in a long time.
