3 Reasons Why the Sun Is Your Friend

By Genevieve Cunningham

It seems like we've been taught over the years that the sun is the enemy. We've been told to stay out of it. To avoid it. To cover ourselves. And there's a lot of truth behind these statements. There's a lot of danger associated with excessive sun exposure. But it's also important to remember that the sun is our friend. We need it, and if we get exposure to the sun in safe ways, it can actually bring a lot of good into our lives. Before you ban the sun for good in your life, take a look at these three reasons why soaking in the sun can be good for your long-term health.

It's Essential for Vitamin D

Vitamin D is an essential vitamin. It's important for bone health and for efficient function of the immune system. And as many people already know, it's absolutely essential for mental well-being. Unfortunately, we can't get Vitamin D through very many foods. Our best source of Vitamin D is the sun. But in order to actually soak in the Vitamin D, we have to expose ourselves to the light. To do it safely, put on some sunscreen, stay out in small increments, and get the good from the sun without too much damage.

It's Really Good for Mental Health

In places that don't see much sun, depression rates tend to be a lot higher. Why? Because the sun is an absolutely crucial factor in good moods and mental health. We need the natural light -- and our bodies and minds let us know very quickly if we're not getting enough. If you're serious about maintaining good mental health, spending time in the sun should be a no-brainer.

It Helps With Sleeping Patterns

When we don't get enough sleep, our health suffers. We feel tired and rundown. We might feel additional aches and pains. We might feel irritable or depressed. Once our sleeping patterns get out of sync, it's hard to get back on track. But the sun can help! Allowing your body to see natural light first thing in the morning and throughout the day can help your body recover its natural rhythm. It might take some time, but the end results will be worth the effort.

Just like anything else in life, the sun is good in moderation. When we get too much, it can damage our health. But when we get some sun in a safe and responsible way, it can be so good for our long-term well-being. Buy some good sunscreen, always keep layers, and know where the shade is. Then get out, soak in some sun, and experience these important benefits to your health.
