Correct Your Posture Correctly

By Brandi Goodman

Trying to stand tall isn't all you have to do to get your posture corrected. There's much more you'll have to accomplish if you truly want to have a proper pose whether you're sitting or standing. Correct your posture correctly with a few tips in mind.

Stretch Often

It can be hard to sit or stand upright when your back is aching. Stretch your muscles often so they do not lock up and become tight. You need your body loose and flexible to maintain correct posture. If you've been sitting for some time, get up and walk around if possible to stretch your legs. Even if you aren't able to get out of your seat at the moment, you can at least roll your shoulders, reach your arms up, and arch your back for a few simple stretches that can help.

Strengthen Your Core

Your back and abdomen require strength to maintain posture. Weakened muscles in these areas will cause your body to slouch. It's important to perform regular exercises that work to strengthen your core so you can prevent this problem. A bridge, plank, child's pose, forward fold, and downward dog can all help. Yoga is great for core strength and stability.

Keep Your Shoes Low to the Ground

Too many women attempt to wear high heels in an effort to make themselves taller. This only throws your posture off and can make it difficult to maintain your stance. It's best to keep your shoes low to the ground so you aren't remaining raised up for extended intervals. Your muscles won't have to work harder to hold your body in position.

Avoid Crossing Your Legs

It's best to sit upright with your feet flat on the floor when you're seated. Crossing your legs can result in a forward-slouching position and possibly put strain on your lower back. Avoid crossing your legs when you're sitting so you can maintain the right posture and prevent pain.

Use Back and Hip Support

Many people are wise enough to use a lumbar support for their back. Whether you use an actual lumbar support or simply place a cushion behind you, it should keep your back from aching. You should be using a hip support as well. A hard, uncomfortable chair can quickly cause sore hips and legs. Place a cushion underneath you as well for proper support all around.

Start learning how you can correct your posture and keep your spine in line. Don't start slouching again once you've made your corrections.. You always want to utilize proper posture for an ache-free back and better overall health.
