Stress Busters to Take Into the New Year

By Brandi Goodman

The end of the year can bring about feelings of stress in many people. You should do what you can to learn how to stop stress now so you don't take it into the new year. Take your stress busters instead so you can continue to manage anxieties and maintain your well-being all year long.

Take a Walk

A walk is a great way to reduce some stress off your shoulders The exercise can release endorphins and help boost your mood. Enjoy a leisurely walk around a park path to take in all the beauty of nature surrounding you. Any form of exercise can help to reduce stress, making it an excellent option any time you're feeling overwhelmed.

Speak With Your Support System

It's important to have a support system when you're going through tough times. When you're feeling particularly stressed and burdened, share it with your friends and family so you can get the weight off your shoulders. They may have some helpful advice for you to get through it, or can simply be a listening ear so you can vent your frustrations.

Enjoy Your 'Me Time'

Never feel guilty about taking 'me time.' This time away for yourself should be thoroughly enjoyed so you truly release stress and tension from your mind and body and feel at ease for a while. Push your negative thoughts away as best you can and simply do something you love. Read a book. Take a hot bath. Dance to music. Watch a movie. Draw. Anything you enjoy doing, spend some time fully engaging yourself in the activity. It's best to do this at least a couple times per week -- more if you're able.

Rely on Healthy Habits

When you're feeling stressed, it's easy to turn to unhealthy coping mechanisms. Don't pick up that bag of sweets or drink a bottle of liquor. Instead, you should be relying on healthy habits to get you through. Exercise is one option, but even nutritious foods can help. Sit down with a salad and relax your mind as you enjoy the crunch of the vegetables and croutons.

Learning how to manage your stress levels can help promote better mental health and overall well-being. Find stress busters that work now that you can take into the new year and continue to utilize as helpful tools throughout your lifetime. You never want to become so overwhelmed by stress that sleep becomes difficult and illness sets in easily.
