Celebrate These February Observances in Healthy Ways
By Brandi Goodman
Each month, new observances come to light. Many showcase unhealthy habits that aren't worth celebrating. Bavarian Cream Pie Day, for example, encourages you to eat the dessert. This sugar-filled, calorie-packed food is less than ideal. However, many observances can be celebrated in healthy ways, including many of those listed for February.
Valentine's Day is a celebration of love. Lots of people gift chocolates on this occasion. Rather than stick to this unhealthy treat, try the alternative gift options for your loved one. Offer a bouquet of flowers, a homemade, healthy treat, and some jewelry. You could also buy an empty heart-shaped box that's normally filled with candies and replace it with other items. A box of essential oils for a diffuser would be worthwhile.
Great American Pizza Bake
This celebration occurs every year in February for just one week out of the month -- often the second one. It's meant to encourage people everywhere to try their hand at baking a unique pizza creation. Don't fall back on standard ingredients such as sausage and pepperoni. Opt for something entirely unique. This time is perfect for the health-enthusiast as any fruit or vegetable you can think of is on the table. Want to try a sweet potato pizza or a turkey and cheese option? You may find your new favorite recipe when you do, and it will be healthy for you if you use the right ingredients.
American Heart Month
American Heart Month encourages everyone to learn more about heart health. Your heart needs to remain healthy if you have any hope to overall. Vow to exercise more so you can boost your heart rate and lower blood pressure. Wear red and walk around town with a sign promoting heart health. You should be encouraging it in yourself and in others.
Canned Food Month
February is also Canned Food Month. Most canned foods aren't ideal to eat. It's far better to enjoy a whole food version. However, some canned options are better than others. Make a shopping trip and take the time to read the nutrition labels on the cans you're choosing. Only select those with low amounts of sodium, few calories, and limited sugar. Many options are packed with each and detrimental to your well-being.
No matter the month or the observance, you can always find a way to make it healthy. Even that Boston Cream Pie Day can have a more nutritional option when you make the dessert from scratch and make some substitutions. Your health matters, and finding ways to incorporate it into fun events can make it seem even more worthwhile to achieve.
