The Summer Sleep Struggle Can Be Stopped With 5 Tips
By Brandi Goodman
Sleeping in the summer heat can be difficult to achieve. You may find yourself tossing and turning all night when you're sweating instead of sleeping. The summer sleep struggle can be stopped though. You just need to keep a few tips in mind to achieve the rest your body needs.
Open the Windows on the Shady Side
Most homes have a shady side and a side that sees the sun the most. Pay attention to where the sun shines the brightest in the morning, and be sure to keep those windows closed so you don't let unwanted heat in. Instead, open the windows on the shady side so some of the cool air felt in that area can make its way indoors.
Cool Your Cotton Sheets
First, use cotton sheets. They help keep you cool better than other fabric types. You should be sure to cool these sheets before it's time for bed so you can drift off easier. Fold them tightly inside a Ziploc bag and put them in a freezer for a bit. They'll be nice and cold and feel great in the heat.
Take a Cool Shower
You can lower your body's temperature before bed by taking a cool shower. You don't want the water to be extremely cold and a shock to the system, but cool water will work wonders. Just a few minutes standing under the water can help you cool you a lot more than you realize.
Choose a Temporary Sleep Spot
If you sleep upstairs, you may want to rethink that for the time being. Choosing a temporary sleep spot that works better on hot nights can help tremendously. Perhaps you have the space to set up a hammock. That would work great to allow for better breathability than a mattress provides. You may also consider moving your mattress from your upstairs bedroom to a downstairs space. The basement will be the coolest if you have one.
Avoid Alcohol
Drinking alcohol can make you feel hot fast. You may even realize you're sweating after you've had an adult beverage. Avoid alcohol on hot days, especially in the last few hours before bed.
Struggle to sleep no more. Your summer sleep worries can be over when you apply these tips to your life. Making yourself as cool as possible before you try to hit the hay will help you achieve the Zzz's you need all summer long -- and any other time you aren't feeling comfortable in bed.
