Stretch for Optimal Wellness!
By Donna Stark
Most of us know that if we want to improve our overall fitness levels, we have to incorporate strength and endurance exercises to our workout routines. But what many people don't think about is how important it is to include plenty of stretching exercises as well. The benefits that come from giving your body a good stretch before and after you work out are too numerous to count, but they don't just stop with fitness! You see, stretching can also help to improve your overall health and wellness too. Care to find out more? Keep reading!
Enhances Physical Performance
It doesn't matter if you are trying to get a quick workout in or are participating in a serious competition, the more you condition and prepare your body for physical activity, the greater advantage you'll have once you begin. Stretching can help improve your performance by maximizing the function of your muscles. It's also the best way to reduce the risk of injury and help your body recover once the activity is over.
Increases Range of Motion
When your trainer or chiropractor talks about your range of motion, they are referring to your ability to move your joints in all directions. Obviously, you need a good range of motion for workouts and sports, but don't forget about your daily movements as well. In order to remain independent and take care of yourself with little to no help, you need to be able to pick things up, get yourself dressed, reach for items in the pantry, and brush your teeth. Stretching can help increase your range of motion by improving your overall flexibility and reducing muscle tension and stiffness.
It makes sense to stretch your neck or back when they are feeling stiff and tight, but did you know that you can bring pain relief in those areas by stretching a completely different part of your body too? Stretching your shoulders and upper chest may help loosen the muscles connected to your neck and stretching your hips, hamstrings, and thighs may help alleviate the pain you feel in your lower back. Ask a professional or look online for some videos on different stretching techniques if you aren't sure where to begin.
