A Chiropractic Guide to Preventing Pain at School

By Brandi Swieter

Throughout the school year, students often complain of back pain. Whether they’re sitting too long at the same desk, carrying a heavy load in their backpacks, or spending lots of time trekking across campus, pain can be a serious problem for students. By following a chiropractic guide to preventing pain at school, more pupils can experience a pain-free year.

Stretch Often

Stretching allows the body to prepare for the movements it will be doing throughout the day. It’s important for students to stretch before and after physical activity, such as gym class, as well as after sitting stiff for a duration of time, such as during a long class. Moving the body to get the blood flowing will go a long way in keeping the joints and muscles flexible and free
from pain.

Wear the Right Shoes and Backpack

Both shoes and backpack can cause discomfort for students. These items should be selected carefully and worn properly to ensure the right fit and a painless day. A backpack should be worn high on the back with no sagging. Both straps should be utilized. Shoes need to be comfortable and sturdy with a proper fit. It isn’t ideal to wear shoes that are too tight and pinch the feet or too large that cause a person to trip and stumble. Choosing the right sizes of these items and wearing them correctly are some of the best things a student can do to prevent pain at school.

Drink Lots of Water

Many students take a quick sip of water at the drinking fountain between classes. Others don’t drink anything throughout the day except at lunch time. Everyone should really be drinking a lot more water than they currently do, especially when at school. The body needs adequate water intake to work properly and remain flexible instead of stiff. Getting enough fluid will help to keep the joints flexible and free and prevent pain as well.

Schedule Regular Chiropractic Visits

Adults are not the only ones who can see the chiropractor. Children and teens can have regular chiropractic visits scheduled to help keep joint restrictions from causing problems. It is one of the best ways to manage pain and stay pain-free throughout the school year and the rest of the time.

Students struggling with back pain at school can visit The Joint Chiropractic to get an assessment. The doctor of chiropractic will determine any underlying issues and find ways to help resolve the problems. Regular chiropractic care paired with preventive measures for avoiding pain will help students remain pain-free throughout the school year and after.
