How Chiropractic Advice Can Improve Walking Abilities

By Brandi Goodman

Walking at least 10,000 steps throughout the day can help you to lose at least one pound per week. You can switch up your routine by walking outdoors, on an indoor track, back and forth through the house, up and down any stairs you come across, and more. Get your steps in any way possible, but be sure to follow some chiropractic advice so you can improve your fitness and health without the pain that sometimes comes with doing so.

Drink Lots of Water

Keeping your body hydrated during a workout ensures it's more efficient. Drink lots of water before you start walking, during your walk, and after you've finished to prevent a stiff and sore body. Your joints will remain flexible and able to handle the activity better if you're properly hydrated. You will also limit your chance for injury.

Pick Proper Footwear

An old pair of tennis shoes isn't going to work well for a walk. Sandals won't do the trick either. You need a strong and sturdy pair of shoes that fit well and are comfortable. It's important to purchase new workout shoes at least once a year so they do not become worn out and bothersome to the feet. Support and padding is key. Cushioned soles that help to absorb the impact of the hard ground on your body is also imperative.

Use a Soft Track

Even with the proper footwear, the hard ground can still be harsh on your joints. It's best to find a soft track, such as one that has some cushion to it, so more of the shock is absorbed. Many local parks or recreation centers offer cushioned tracks. A dirt path may also suffice compared to concrete.

Alternate Your Terrain Type

The type of terrain you walk on should never be the same. If you walk on a cushioned track with no incline on a Monday, for example, then on Tuesday you should hike a slanted path that will offer more resistance. Switching up the type of terrain you walk on can help to build your strength and target various areas of your lower body.

Get an Adjustment

Get an adjustment with your local chiropractor to ensure your body is in the right shape to start a walking routine. Joint restrictions or subluxations can cause serious strain and discomfort which will only be made worse by working out. Your chiropractor can also offer guidance on stretches to try before walking, as well as other helpful tips so you can make the most of your walk.

Reach your daily steps using chiropractic advice so you can maintain a strong and healthy body. You want to keep up your strength while preventing the pain that easily sets in during land workouts.
