5 Pieces of Lawn Care Advice From the Chiropractor

By Brandi Goodman

Lawn care is an essential summer activity. You need to keep up with your yard if you want the outside of your home to look as nice and well-kept as the inside. After all, it's the first thing that people see when they arrive. Yard work can cause back pain if you're not careful, so following a piece of lawn care advice from a chiropractor is in order.

Get New Shoes Each Year

Most people think they're saving their good pair of shoes by throwing on an old pair of tennis shoes to do their yard work. Though this may keep a good pair nice, it won't do any good for their feet, legs, or back. You should get new shoes each year and make sure to replace what you wear outdoors too. A supportive pair of sneakers will go a long way toward making sure your body remains pain-free.

Keep Your Head Up

No, this doesn't mean to stay positive, though that's a good tip too. When you're raking, mowing, or tackling other yard work tasks, you need to keep your head held up rather than looking down. This will prevent pain in your neck and shoulders. You can glance down with your eyes instead of completely tilting your neck downward to see what you're doing.

Work Before 10 or After 6

Hot days can make you feel exhausted faster. It's best to complete your yard work before 10 a.m. or after 6 p.m., as these tend to be cooler times of the day. The daytime heat is the harshest and will leave you feeling dehydrated quickly if you're not drinking enough water.

Stay Hydrated

Speaking of drinking water, that's another recommendation from your chiropractor. Your joints will remain more flexible and free from pain if you're keeping your body hydrated. Drink plenty of water before, during, and after your lawn care routine so you prevent injury.

Be Careful How You Start Your Mower

Mowing the grass is one of the most common lawn care tasks you'll complete throughout the summer. You need to be careful how you're starting it up, especially if there's a cord to pull to get it going. Never lean over and pull the cord. It's better to bend at the knees and pull it from this position so you don't cause harm to your back.

Always follow your chiropractor's advice when working on your yard or performing other strenuous activities. You wouldn't want to end up in the chiropractor's office with a painful injury. Just a few tweaks to your typical lawn care plan and you'll be finishing your work without the normal pain to show for it.
