Back Pain and Weight: Connection or Coincidence?

By Genevieve Cunningham

It's no secret that excessive weight and obesity are serious problems in America. More people than ever before are carrying around a few extra pounds -- from young kids all the way to older adults. In a lot of ways, we ignore the problem. Unless it's causing noticeable issues, we sweep it under the rug. But it's entirely possible that excess weight actually is causing a problem and you simply don't realize the connection. Need an example? Back pain. If you've noticed more back pain than usual, take a look at the possible connection and some tips for feeling better now.

Does Excess Weight Cause Pain?

Excess weight can definitely cause pain in certain situations. Why? Because every person's body is only meant to hold a certain amount. A smaller frame will be able to hold less weight than a larger frame. When we add more weight than our bodies can handle, it strains our bones and muscles and ligaments. We are far more likely to experience soreness or pain -- especially in the back and joints. As we lose weight, we take some of that pressure off of our body, and the pain is often significantly diminished.

Should You Lose Weight?

Losing weight is a personal decision. To answer the questions honestly, visit your doctor for a consultation. The doctor can tell you whether your body weight is healthy, or whether you should lose some weight. Don't worry about the number on the scale, your clothing size, or other people's opinions to make this decision. Make it with your doctor -- with only your health and wellness in mind.

Don't Forget Chiropractic Care

If you think your weight is contributing to back or joint pain, it might be a good idea to see the chiropractor. Chiropractors may be able to help in two ways. First, they can help eliminate the pain by improving the overall health of the spine. With joint restrictions gone, pain is reduced. As the pain is reduced, you may find that movement is easier and more enjoyable. And this brings a secondary benefit of chiropractic care -- exercise. Without the pain, it's easier to move, which then contributes to weight loss. Getting regular care may start a very healthy cycle of weight loss, movement, and pain-free living that can last for the rest of your life.
