3 Signs You Might Have Anxiety

 By KayLee Chie Kuehl

To an extent, feeling anxious is a normal part of life. Maybe you've got a big event coming up, or you're in the presence of someone you really like. Either way, there's an amount of anxiety to be expected from day-to-day living, and it's pretty common. However, there is a difference between natural anxiety and a diagnosable anxiety disorder. If you find yourself stuck in a pattern of thoughts that are so overwhelming you're unable to perform certain tasks or function throughout the day, you might be dealing with an anxiety disorder.

Differentiating between natural anxiety and an anxiety disorder can be very difficult. A number of the symptoms pointing towards an anxiety disorder can also be common feelings, so it's crucial to understand how they're separate. So, here are three signs you may be dealing with an anxiety disorder over everyday anxiousness.

Self-Consciousness/Self-Doubt

It's normal for us to feel self-conscious every now and again. But in regards to anxiety, this can develop into a hectic thought pattern. Consistent questioning of our worth and goodness is exhausting, and when occurring on a frequent basis often proves debilitating. If we believe time and time again we're less than what we are, we face significant damage to our self-image.

Self-consciousness in conjunction with anxiety is similar to dealing with an oversensitivity; too much stimulation causes excessive activation. To provide a scenario, picture being in the same room as a crowd of people, but feeling as though every pair of eyes is on you -- judging you. Our minds are sent into overdrive, and our bodies exhibit uncontrollable physical reactions, such as nausea, shaking, and trembling.

Irrational Fear

Fear is also a natural response, and keeps us safe in certain situations. But too much of it can inhibit our ability to function throughout the day. For example, let's say you're afraid of your partner being unfaithful. Instead of coming across this fear, sitting with it, and letting it pass, it injects itself into the mind and festers. Now, you're at the mercy living through exactly what you're afraid of over and over again.

If severe enough, fears can develop into phobias, which are defined as an extreme or irrational fear. A few include: animal phobias, blood-injection-injury phobias, and situational phobias.

Flashbacks

Flashbacks can also be a normal part of our day -- even a pleasant one! We possibly remember a wonderful walk in the park, or a stimulating conversation we had with a friend. But other times, flashbacks can act as a symptom of anxiety. If we have experienced traumatic events in the past, those memories can creep up on us. Anxiety plays a part when those painful situations continue to replay in our minds. This is common in post-traumatic stress disorders and other forms of anxiety.

Signs of anxiety will be different for everyone. Some feel its physical burden, while others suffer from its mental symptoms. When figuring out whether or not you are dealing with an anxiety disorder, it's important to know when to speak to a professional. Reading blogs and articles can be helpful, especially when trying to identify your symptoms. But if you're concerned you may truly be suffering from an anxiety disorder, contact a professional to figure out the proper steps forward.
