Give These Healthy Breakfast Substitutions a Try!

By Stepy Kamei

If you're working on improving the nutritional value of your meals, you're making a smart step towards better overall health and well-being. The process of cleaning up your diet may involve getting rid of some of your favorite breakfast foods if they are ultimately unhealthy and lacking nutritional content. As you start to eliminate these foods, you may worry about missing the taste they can provide. Fortunately, an easy way to transition to a healthier diet is by swapping out some of your less healthy food options with much more nutritious substitutions and alternatives. You can learn more about some of the most effective food swaps and substitutions by continuing to read below!

Morning Beverage Solutions

Which beverage do you start your day off with? Millions of us turn to the classic standby of coffee. If you drink coffee in the morning, you may want to consider consuming it in moderation, as it can wreak havoc on your anxiety levels and digestive tract. Furthermore, you should strongly consider swapping out the creamer you use, as it's more than likely loaded with sugar and unnatural additives, and use vanilla extract, honey, or coconut milk instead.

If you're ready to completely give coffee the boot, try replacing it with black or green tea. These types of tea will provide a caffeine boost, without the accompanying jitters coffee can bring.

Fruit juice is another popular option. Be sure to choose a brand that does not add sugar or preservatives, as this will provide very little nutritional value, and only serve to spike your blood sugar levels an unhealthy amount, leading to a quick rise and fall in your energy levels before lunch comes around.

Breakfast Cereals

Common breakfast cereals are notorious for having little to no nutritional value. Instead, they are loaded with sugar, and devoid of important morning nutrients such as protein and fiber. Swap out cereal for oatmeal or whole fat yogurt. You can top both with fresh fruit, granola, and honey for added vitamins and minerals.

Energy Bars

If you need a quick on-the-go breakfast meal, check the ingredients on your favorite energy bar carefully. It may be packed with refined sugar, artificial ingredients, and preservatives -- and that's not the kind of fuel your body needs to get through the morning. Take the time to do some research and find energy bars that actually consist of whole, lightly processed ingredients. Whole grain oats, cacao nibs, honey, dried fruit, and nuts and seeds are all excellent choices for energy bar ingredients.
