A Smile May Be a Pathway to Better Health

By Tom Herrin

There is no reason for anyone to feel that they can do nothing to contribute to improving their own health.  While there are plenty of problems they may have, there are some simple solutions that are overlooked far too often.  The easiest things often seem to be too easy.  We sell them short because we feel that whatever provides results must be complicated.  Most people are familiar with the effect a smile has on them.  Whether it's walking into a retail establishment, an office, a classroom, or whatever, the act of being greeted with a smile may make all the difference for the receiver of the smile.  In reality, it can do good things for the one who offers it as well.

It Can Be a Great Way to Build Relationships

A smile can make a person seem more approachable and empathetic.  It is a great way to begin a meeting or introduction.  Even a fake smile is thought to have an impact, so it may well be a way to improve overall outlook.  People who are happy are obviously more likely to have more lasting relationships, whether it is in marriage or friendships.

It Can Help in Dealing With Stress

Most people have some degree of stress in their lives.  It can be from work, finances, school, or many other sources.  Smiling more can help the body to be in a state where it is better able to deal with it.  The very act seems to be able to slow heart rate and lower blood pressure.  These are critical parts of a formula for reducing stress.  When stress is less, people are able to make better decisions as well as perform simple tasks with greater ease.

It Could Mean Less Illness

Smiling releases endorphins that can dull pain.  It also enables the body to be in a better condition to respond to things that can cause disease.  It has long been believed that people who are happier have greater resistance.  One study even found that those who smile more may live longer.  If you didn’t have anything to smile about before, maybe that will provide a little incentive.  Who knows?  You may be able to have an impact on your own life along with someone else’s.
