White Knuckles May Contribute to Back Pain

By Tom Herrin

When most people think of back pain, they think in terms of heavy lifting or some kind of accident.  There are other causes as well.  For those who face the task of driving in heavy traffic on a daily basis, they may know only too well that those frequent starts and stops can take a toll on even the healthiest of bodies.  The notion of clutching the steering wheel in a tight grip as they maneuver in and out of the lanes is both physically and mentally taxing.  If all of that stopping and staring ends up causing you back pain, a visit to a chiropractor can provide the reprieve you seek.

Knuckles and the Back

While there may not seem to be a direct relationship between the back and the grip, but it is for certain the tight grip is likely related to some kind of tension.  When people drive in these unpleasant traffic situations, they are on edge.  The sudden starts and stops may wear on tense back muscles.  This may end up causing strain.  When this happens, the muscles are weakened.  A joint dysfunction may occur in which pressure is placed on a nerve and cause pain.  It can be very annoying and cause a person to be unable to find any peace and relaxation.  Pain medications often act only as temporary relief.

Chiropractors Can Treat the Source

When people go to a chiropractor with back pain, they are usually given an adjustment in which the back is gently manipulated so that the injured joint is restored to its normal position.  This can relieve the pressure from the nerve and the pain.  Since it is all done naturally, no pain medication is used.  There is no risk of addiction or side effects.  Many times, the person may return to normal daily activities sooner.  The chiropractor may also suggest some exercises to do that may help strengthen the muscles that support the spine.
