Sidestepping Sickness During the Holidays
By Donna Stark
The holiday season is fast approaching and for many of us, that means it is time to reconnect with loved ones across the country. But as much as we love to visit with our families, there isn't a whole lot to love about the hotbed of germs we may encounter during our travels. If you are traveling during the next couple of weeks and want to know how to reduce the risk of catching something and getting sick, keep reading. Your local chiropractors at The Joint Chiropractic have some ideas.
Sidestepping Any Sickness
You are going to need some powerful weapons in your arsenal if you want to sidestep all those nasty germs heading your way, but which ones should you choose? Well, your local chiropractors can think of two. Let's take a look at them below.
Immune System
As you probably already know, there are plenty of options to choose from when it comes to improving your overall health and wellness, and that couldn't be truer than when it involves the strength of your immune system. Ask your primary care doctor which vitamins and supplements you should be taking. A few good ones to ask about during this time of year are Vitamins C and D, zinc, and selenium. You can also ask your doctor if there are any other things you can do to strengthen and support your body without pushing it beyond its capabilities.
Common Sense
The thing about common sense that often gets us in trouble is that even while knowing what to do, we may not always practice those behaviors. Because of that, it's always good to review the healthy habits we should be engaged in every day.
- Wash your hands frequently and always before you sit down to eat
- Keep your distance from those who are showing symptoms of illness
- Stay home if you aren't feeling well
- Try to reduce your sugar intake and avoid processed foods
- Consume a nutrient-dense diet and stay hydrated
- Get the recommended amount of sleep every night
- Let the sun shine on your face
- Keep your home clean and disinfected
Ending the Year on a Healthy Note
Remember, cold and flu germs are notorious for attacking without warning, so be sure to follow the tips that are listed above. Take care of your immune system, use your common sense, and start looking forward to your trip. Your loved ones can't wait to see you!
