4 Reasons to Take Your Workout Outside

By Genevieve Cunningham

There’s something about working out outdoors that feels fresh and often more challenging. Maybe it’s the uneven terrain, the natural elements, or the wide open space. Whatever the reason, getting in an exercise session outside feels good. And yet many people do their best to avoid it. They’d rather be in the gym with an air conditioner and hot showers. While this is understandable, changing it up from time to time helps to keep your workout exciting and yourself motivated. If you’re a little intimidated by exercising without the comfort of your gym, take a look at these reasons to take it outside.

Fresh Air Challenges Your Lungs

There’s nothing wrong with breathing in that filtered air conditioned air, but a little fresh air can really do the body and mind some good. Fresh air tends to challenge the lungs a bit, which can be good when you’re trying to improve cardio. It also has a different feel and smell, so it can improve your motivation and outlook at the same time. When your workout is feeling stale, getting a little fresh air may completely turn it around.

A Change of Scenery Alters Perspective

Looking at something new can make all the difference. If you get on the same treadmill every day, or you lift the same set of weights every day, changing your scenery may be just what you need to change your perspective. Even one day outside, a day in which you can see the trees, grass, and new people, may boost your motivation and get your fitness goals back on track.

You’ll Probably Have to Change Your Routine

It’s probable that you won’t be able to do your exact routine that you always do when you take it outside. You might not have the equipment, the appropriate space, or any number of reasons. This is actually a good thing. While your current workout may be top-notch, it’s always good for the body to change it up. It forces new muscles to work and gives you new challenges. And this is the true way to change your body for the better.

You Can Soak in Some Vitamin D

Vitamin D is essential for your body’s health. Without it, you can suffer from depression, aches in the bones, and other negative side effects. And our biggest source of Vitamin D? The sun! While we can get this vitamin in some foods, the list of Vitamin D foods is extremely small, and you’re unlikely to get all you need. With a workout outdoors, you can soak in some much needed Vitamin D while also getting in a great exercise.

If the weather is nice and you have a backyard, nearby park, or any sort of open space, take your workout outside! You’ll get to experience a new scene, new smells, new people, and a new attitude about your routine. You may be surprised at how much you like it, and by how much your motivation skyrockets with just a simple change of location.
