Switching up Toward Better Nutrition

By Stephen R. Farris

Trying to maintain a healthy, nutritious diet for you and your family can be challenging. Our busy schedules with work, taking kids to school, picking them up and trying to find the time to cook for everyone is almost impossible to do. That's why restaurants and fast food institutions are thriving so well these days.

It's also why our nation is leading in obesity, especially with our kids. It is possible to change all of this, however, you'll need to take time and write out some goals. It won't take much to start towards a healthier lifestyle change, just a few steps at a time.

To begin, take a look at your shopping list. Chances are it's loaded down with frozen pizza, hot pockets, burritos, snack cakes, cookies and all the stuff that's not nutritious for our bodies. Yes, it's quicker to throw frozen items in the microwave and zap them. But the bottom line, it's not healthy and you're robbing you family for the nutrients and minerals they need each day.

Make a Change With Your Grocery List

Plan meals ahead of time. Think about what you want to cook for you and your family for the week. Jot down all the items you need, then head to the grocery store. You can probably buy some of the items you'll need in bulk, as many grocery stores have an aisle designated just for that. Buy a variety of spices that will add flavor to your meals too.

Your Freezer Can Be Your Friend

Not all frozen foods are bad for you. There are a variety of vegetables in your grocers frozen food section that have the much needed nutrients and minerals your body needs. Not only that, you can cook meals in batches and store them in the freezer. Same concept, toss them in the microwave and zap. Only this time what comes out will be a healthier lunch or dinner for the family.

Change up Your Cooking Routine

You don't always have to follow a recipe verbatim. Be bold and try something new to your dishes. Add a different spice to enhance the flavor more, or instead of spaghetti with meat sauce, use another type of pasta. The possibilities are endless and your family will probably enjoy the changes as well.
