How to Sleep Well No Matter Where You Are

By Brandi Goodman

Sleep can be hard to come by even in your own home. Go somewhere else and you're even more likely to experience poor rest. With some tips in mind, you should find it easier to sleep no matter where you are. Whether you're at home or elsewhere, it's important that you get a good night's rest.

At Home

Setting a sleep routine should be first on your list when you're at home each night. You can set any routine you want, just be sure it's something you're likely to follow and actually helps you drift off. You might decide to take a warm bath every night and keep the TV and phone screens off for at least an hour before bed. A sleep mask might help some, while others simply need their curtains pulled close so no light gets in.

At a Hotel

Getting sleep at a hotel often proves difficult. The nightly noises and too-light curtains don't help. You should get in the habit of bringing some of your own things from home to make rest at night easier to achieve. A pillow from home might help if the one you're provided is too flat or too thick for your liking. A sleep mask would also come in handy so you can block out the light that comes through. Ear plugs will do the same for noise.

In a Tent

Sleeping in nothing but a zipped up blanket on the ground isn't good for your back. You'll most likely find yourself tossing and turning at night if this is all you have. It's better to bring along an air mattress or cot so you can have some support while you sleep.

Using the Military Method

If you're still having trouble falling asleep, the military method may come in handy. This method involves relaxing all your muscles, including those in your face. You need to drop your shoulders so there's no tension held there, and relax your chest as you exhale your breath. Clear your mind and envision a calm, relaxing scene. Repeat to yourself "don't think" over and over until your mind is clear and you can drift off.

Sleep is necessary for good health. If you aren't getting enough rest each night, you're more susceptible to stress and illness. Find ways to make it easier to fall asleep no matter where you're at and maintain your well-being.
