Signs of Hormone Trouble and How to Manage It

By Genevieve Cunningham

Hormones. This is one word that strikes fear and uncertainty in the vast majority of people. Why? Perhaps it’s because we don’t fully understand hormones. We know they’re necessary. We know they’re delicate. And we know that poor hormonal health can cause major problems. But when problems arise, most of us are at a loss. If you want to keep your hormones healthy, it’s important to be proactive. Take a look at these signs of a possible problem, followed by some tips for getting them back under control.

Signs of a Hormonal Imbalance

There are many signs of a hormonal imbalance, and every person may experience something different. A few of the more common signs might include:

  • Weight Gain - If your weight is creeping up for no apparent reason, it might be a sign that hormones are out of whack.

  • Hair Loss - Hair falls out sometimes, and that’s OK. But if yours is coming out by the fistful, it might be something more to worry about.

  • Mood Swings - The most common and well known sign of a hormonal imbalance … swinging from one mood to the next quickly. If this is you, there might be help available.

Tips for Managing Hormones

If you suspect that your hormones are acting up, it’s imperative that you take action. Take a look at these ways to help get your hormones back under control.

  • Improve Your Diet - The foods that we eat play a huge role in the overall state of our bodies and minds, and the hormones are no exception. Try improving your diet by eliminating junk and replacing it with healthy foods, and you may notice your hormones even out a bit.

  • Take Your Vitamins - Even with a healthy diet, certain nutrients may be lacking. Try adding a multivitamin to your routine. It is especially helpful if you take vitamins specific to your body. Buy the appropriate vitamin - men’s, women’s, or children’s -- and then take them every day.

  • Visit Your Doctor - Sometimes the best course of action is to see the doctor. Doctors can test your hormones to see whether an imbalance is present, and then prescribe you the proper treatment to get you feeling better than ever before.

Hormones are a big deal. Though we don’t give them much thought unless a problem is present, it’s so important to keep them well balanced and healthy all of the time. Watch out for these signs of an imbalance, and make sure to get help if you suspect your hormones are acting up. The healthier the hormones, the better you’ll feel, and the healthier you’ll be on a daily basis.
