3 Good Reasons to Keep a Food Diary

By Genevieve Cunningham

When it comes to losing weight, one of the most often recited pieces of advice is to keep a food diary. Write down everything you eat and drink, the experts say. It's a key part of the weight loss process. But unless you understand exactly why this might be necessary, you may not take it seriously enough to do you any good. You may think that you'll remember everything you eat so there's no reason to write it down. But the truth is that this process really can work! If you're anxious to finally lose weight, take a look at these reasons why a food diary might be a good idea.

You Probably Eat More Than You Think

Some people are great at measuring everything and consuming the perfect number of calories. But that's not the majority! Most people think they're eating well when they're actually consuming far too many calories. Keeping a food diary forces you to track every single bite or nibble, and in doing this, you may find the calories stack up faster than you realize.

Your Diet May Not Be as Balanced as You Think

For some people, a food diary shows them that they eat far too many of certain foods and far too few of others. They may notice that in a week's time, they eat a ton of grains but very few veggies. When it comes to weight loss, this matters! If you suspect that your diet may not be as balanced as it should be, keeping a food diary may confirm your suspicions and help you make a plan of action.

Awareness is Key

To lose weight or improve health in general, you really need to be aware. When you keep a food diary, you learn to become aware of what you consume. But this often spills over into other areas. You may suddenly become more aware of your movement, aches and pains, or body systems functioning. If awareness is a goal -- and it probably should be -- a food diary can really help.

If you haven't tried it yet, it might be time to keep track of what you consume for a while. You might not have to do it forever, but doing it for even a little while can help you move toward your goals. Give this a try now, and you may finally find some success in your health endeavor.
