Exercise Should Never Be a Threat to Health

By Tom Herrin

When people finally make that decision to go ahead and begin an exercise program, it is best to do it right.  That means to consider all of the things that are necessary to make it productive and prevent any kind of injury.  Some may not be aware that injuries can be a major complication in many exercise programs.  Even the best of intentions cannot overcome them.  If nothing else, that enthusiasm to get things done can be dampened when people have to sit out for some time or, at least, delay progress.  A good plan should include things that will help the individual to make steady progress without any of those delays.

Know When to Take It Slower

Even those who may feel that they are in pretty good shape at the beginning of a program can overdo it without realizing it.  Their desire to build big muscles, or great endurance, from the start will be much better served by starting with moderate activity.  There is nothing that is much more frustrating than starting out too heavy and suffering an injury that may take weeks to overcome.  For some, this can be so discouraging that they end up losing interest completely.

Dress for The Occasion

Physical activity is no different from anything else.  There is a right and wrong kind of dress to make it work.  In the warm weather, loose fitting clothes are essential.  It is important to remember that they will naturally heat up during the session.  If they are wearing clothing that are too snug or too heavy, they risk seriously overheating.  This can be dangerous as well as unpleasant.  On the other side, if the temps are cool, they should wear clothing that can help keep them warm enough once they have begun to exercise but not so much that they become overheated.

Be in Tune

It is important to get a feel for what it takes.  This is more reason to begin slowly.  This can help us get a feel for what it takes.  I have been a dedicated bicycle rider and done so quite a bit in cold weather.  The issues I have often had to deal with is knowing just what kind of clothing to wear.  For me, it has been best to be cool for about the first five to 10 minutes but be reasonably comfortable after that.  It takes a little trial-and-error, but it is well worth it.
