What Is Amaranth and Why Should You Eat It?
By Paul Rothbart
There are many foods that are common in some cultures and very little known in others. One of these is amaranth, a perennial plant whose seeds and leaves are used as food. It was a staple in the diets of the indigenous peoples of Mexico and Central America for centuries. It has also been grown and consumed in some parts of Asia including India and China. Amaranth is not nearly as common as it once was, but it still exists and has plenty of health benefits for those who decide to try it.
It Helps Build Muscle
The body needs protein to build strong muscles and other tissues. Protein is also used to heal damaged tissue. The main sources of protein for many people are meats but there are plants that contain it too. Amaranth is an excellent source of protein that can be broken down into the amino acids that make up many of the body's tissues and build strong muscles.
It May Prevent Hair Loss
Losing hair as you age is very common. Some people don't mind but for many it's distressing. It can be harmful to self-esteem. Although there is no scientific evidence to back up the claims, many people find that eating amaranth stops hair loss and may even prevent graying. That may or may not be true, but it's worth a try as amaranth brings proven health benefits.
It's Good for Your Bones
Your skeletal structure is only as strong as its bones. Considering that they are the support structure for your body and also protect vital organs, strong bones are very important. Calcium is the most important mineral for bone health. Amaranth contains much more calcium than most plant foods. This is especially important for older women who are prone to osteoporosis and other bone diseases.
It Can Reduce the Risk of Cancer
There are many types of cancer and it's a common chronic disease that afflicts many people. One of the causes of cancer is the work of harmful molecules called free radicals. They attack cells, causing oxidative stress and damaging them. This can cause the cells to mutate and turn cancerous. Fortunately, there are chemicals called antioxidants that fight free radicals. Having antioxidants in your diet can reduce the risk of cancer. Amaranth contains a good amount of several antioxidants.
Amaranth is a good that has been around for a long time but is not especially well known. It can be cooked and eaten as a vegetable or a grain. Adding it to your diet is a good idea as it contains excellent nutrition and many health benefits.
