Chiropractic Care For Gymnasts, Other Kid Athletes

By Donna Kostiew

You’re child has held up their end. They’ve chosen an activity and have committed to it. You watch them sweat at the gym for hours every day, you make sure that they eat the recommended amounts of protein, and you have seen them fall into bed at a decent time. Heck, their grades may even withstand the demands of this sport and the time involved to be successful at it. It seems like a perfect choice.

You have also held up your end as well … you’ve gotten everything that is required and have spent a lot of time and money on this decision. You bought the leotards, the grips, the tape, and the bottles of Biofreeze and Ibuprofen. You’ve taken care of it all, right? Or is something missing?

How About Chiropractic Care?

Did you think of that? So often, people are reactive instead of proactive with their health, and as a mother of a gymnast who has experienced injuries, let me offer this: You don’t want to be reactive with your child’s body and their well-being.

Injuries to children's spines aren’t always a result from the typical contact sports that most people think of, such as football, soccer, basketball, etc. They also occur in non-contact sports like gymnastics, golf and competitive cheerleading. Injuries to the spine can vary, but the very basic prevention strategies are:

  • Strength

  • Alignment

  • Flexibility

Therefore, a chiropractor could very well become your young athlete's BFF. Their knowledge of your child’s sport, and the stressors involved, is helpful in assessing proactive care, and working with specialists who understand the demands placed on a gymnast’s spine and joints is crucial.

Crucial? Is It That important?

The care your chiropractor offers will keep the spinal column in proper alignment, which is critical to your child’s ability to perform. In addition, it will keep the neck, shoulders, hips, knees, and ankles aligned; all are susceptible to sudden, weight-bearing forces and potential injury.

As parents, we take great pride in watching our children succeed and progress through the levels, but as they do, their bodies are put through very demanding and repetitive motions for hours every day. It is very likely your child will fall, will pull a muscle, or will just “hurt” from overuse. Back and joint pain not only affects their performance in the gym, but it also affects their sleeping, their posture, their focus at school, and their mood. And seriously, at the end of the day, do we really want to deal with a moody child on top of everything else?

Regular chiropractic adjustments should be an essential part of any gymnast’s career to avoid the potential restrictive changes to the spine, to keep the body aligned correctly, and to keep your child safe and healthy.
