Surviving the Sickness Season

By Donna Stark

When I think of seasons, I instantly think of the four that we all first learned about way back in preschool. But then after a few seconds or so, I start thinking of the other seasons too. Seasons that make our lives miserable. Seasons like allergy season and the dreaded cold and flu season we still find ourselves living in now. Many experts predict that we still have plenty of coughing, sniffling, and shivering ahead of us, and if you were ever stuck in bed with symptoms like those, you know how awful it can be. It is vital that you protect yourself as best as you can and you can do so by following the helpful tips below.

Get Plenty of Sleep

It doesn't matter if you are well or sick, getting the recommended amount of sleep is critical for improved health! Sleep is the time that your body uses to repair cells, restore energy, and strengthen the immune system. It's important to maintain a strict sleep regimen and to stay home if you are feeling unwell so that you can give your body the rest it needs.

Eat Healthily

You are what you eat, so if you are filling your body with junk, you can expect to feel that way whether it's from a lack of energy or a weakened immune system. Increase your nutrition intake and feel healthier all-around by consuming foods that will strengthen your health, such as garlic, sweet potatoes, dark greens, and plenty of fruits and vegetables. It's also important to stay fully hydrated!

Disinfect Your Home

Cleaning and disinfecting your home regularly will help reduce everyone's risk of illness. Be sure to pay special attention to the common areas that are touched the most, such as doorknobs, handles, and faucets. Also, make sure everyone is washing their hands often and avoid touching your face as much as possible.

Treat Other Illnesses Right Away

You certainly don't want to get sick on top of any other illness you may be fighting, so pay attention to your overall health and seek care as soon as possible during this season of sickness. The healthier your body is, the stronger the fight it can give.

Avoid Crowds

Since many viruses are spread from person to person, your chances of getting sick increase when you are exposed to crowds. Therefore, your best course of action is to avoid them at all costs! But if you can't, just be sure to wash your hands regularly and keep a safe distance from those around you.

Healthy Days

At some point we can say goodbye to this season of viruses, but until that happens, be mindful of your daily habits and pay attention to what your body is saying. Stay well, be patient, and wash those hands of yours!
