Walking the Right Way
By Donna Stark
When it comes to simple and safe ways to improve your overall wellness and fitness, it's hard to beat the benefits of walking. Walking can aid in weight loss, improve the health of your heart and lungs, and protect your body's joints, but it can only do that for as long as you can stay injury-free. If you are thinking about incorporating walking into your daily routine, read the following tips from your local chiropractors first. They will help you start this new journey of yours on the right foot.
Pick the Right Route
You know what your body can handle, so be sure to pick the right route and surface. Don't choose a path with a lot of hills and obstacles if your body isn't ready for the challenge. And if you struggle with maintaining your balance, avoid terrains that may cause you to slip, trip, and fall, such as rocky trails, uneven fields, or soft and sandy beaches.
Choose the Right Clothes
The best way to reduce your risk of injury while exercising is to use the right gear, and walking is no different! You have to wear the right shoes, not only for comfort but for safety as well. Make sure the shoes you choose provide plenty of support, cushion, and traction, and when the cushioning and sole start to wear down, replace that pair with another as soon as you can. In addition to footwear, you need to wear the right kind of clothes, too. It's important that others on the road see you, so wear light colors during the day and reflective clothing at night. It's also better to wear layers in chillier weather.
Stretch Your Body
Slow down! Don't run out the door for your walk until after you have stretched your body. Stretching will enhance the function and performance of your body and decrease the risk of injury and soreness. Ease the tightness and stiffness in your body by marching in place, gently swinging your arms, and stretching your muscles.
Focus on Posture
Before you even have the chance to take your first step on your walk, make sure your mind is clear and focused on your posture. Try to avoid leading with your chin, pull your shoulders back, and keep your head in line with your hips.
Safety First
Now that you've got all the safety precautions out of the way, it's time to grab your shoes, lace them up, and get moving. Walking is a great way to improve your overall health, wellness, and quality of life so head outside and enjoy!
