Finding Balance in A Stressful Life
By Amy Silva
Finding a healthy balance in life can be difficult for those who have a busy schedule and problems coming at them from many areas. We all handle stress differently and what works for one person doesn't work for the next. Finding balance and communicating when we feel overwhelmed is imperative. Stress can begin to take a toll on all aspects of one's health if not managed. Common stressors include:
- Work
- Relationships
- Home
Work Stress
Work stress can't always be dealt with easily, but a good thing to practice is to leave work issues at work. When you are done for the day, leave the problems at the door when you arrive home. It's easy for work stress to turn into everyday stress if family must deal with work issues, too. If a co-worker is causing problems, speak to a superior in confidence and ask for suggestions on how to handle the situation. If the problem is with a difficult client, perhaps asking a trusted friend for advice on how to come to a compromise with them will help. Oftentimes an outsider's view can help see things from a different perspective and may be what it takes to figure out a tough situation.
Relationship Stress
Relationship stress doesn't only come from a spouse or significant other; it can be family or friends that make worries and stress worse. Communication is important to maintain healthy, happy relationships. Compromise when possible and take a break for your emotional health if necessary. Sometimes we outgrow friendships or relationships and must make the difficult decision to walk away permanently because they are unhealthy. Growth is part of life and as we lose some people along the way, new friendships and relationships form to fill the void. One must take care of oneself if they wish to take care of others.
Home Stress
Having too much to deal with at home or on a personal level can build up and leave anyone feeling drained and unhappy. Some people may feel stressed because they're unable to keep up with all the chores, cooking and needs of children. Others may feel all they do is work. If there isn't adequate time to take care of themselves or relax after busy days, stress can become unmanageable. Speaking to a loved-one or friend when feeling overwhelmed is a good way to get others to understand how you feel and offer help. Try planning a fun day with friends or just spend the day relaxing alone. It's never wasted. Leading a stress-free life isn't always easy but reducing stress when possible is one of the best things for overall health.
