Keep Carpal Tunnel at Bay with Chiropractic

By Rachel Carver

We don't know how much we use our hands and wrists until they hurt. Repetitive tasks such as computer work can cause pain and discomfort in your wrists and hands. Most people working in an office setting enjoy their job and end up staying in the same position for long periods of time, especially when cranking out a computer project. Continuous strain on your hands and wrists can result in carpal tunnel syndrome.

Pressure on your median nerve causes carpal tunnel syndrome. This nerve gives you feeling in all of your fingers accept your pinky. The median nerve passes through a narrow path in your wrist -- called the carpal tunnel. Wrist swelling squeezes the tunnel and pinches the median nerve, which causes the symptoms.

You can ease discomfort in your wrists and hands with good posture. Keep your wrists straight while typing. Move your hands freely above the keyboard instead of resting your wrists on a keyboard tray or other surface. This will ease hand and wrist strain.

Routine adjustments at The Joint Chiropractic clinic near you will keep your wrists and the rest of your body in proper alignment. The Joint staff will set you up with a plan to manage your wrist and hand discomfort and keep your symptoms from getting worse. This plan could include weekly or monthly adjustments and other therapies. In addition to your chiropractor's treatment plan, implement these tips into your routine.

Touch Softly

We often use too much force because we complete many daily tasks without much thought. We sometimes grip tools too tightly or pound the computer keyboard instead of using gentle keystrokes. Be mindful of the pressure placed on your hands. Even decreasing it slightly will be beneficial.

Take Breaks

Pause your work to bend and stretch your hands. Stand up at least once an hour and relax your entire body. Giving your fingers a keyboard break will ease discomfort.

Stretch Often

Try this simple stretch throughout your day.

  • Make a fist
  • Slide your fingers up so they point straight out
  • Repeat five to 10 times each day.

Switch Hands

It is natural for us to do the same task with the same hand. Try switching things up. For example, hold your phone in your left hand instead of your right to give muscles you use often a break.

By being proactive and setting a plan with The Joint Chiropractic team, you can manage wrist and hand discomfort. You will also decrease your chances of developing carpal tunnel syndrome.
