Ways to Ease Anxiety and Worry Less

By Sandy Schroeder

Most of us are feeling more positive as we move forward, but sometimes stress and anxiety still trip us up. Just when I think I have everything solved, new issues or challenges push my worry buttons.  If you can relate, the Mayo Clinic has some suggestions to help.

Start moving and keep moving - Create daily routines that keep you physically active every day. A morning run or brisk walk, an after lunch stretch session or an evening workout on a bike or treadmill can reduce stress. Start slowly and keep going to lock in a comfortable routine that happens at the same time each day.

Talk it out - Reach out to trusted friends or family members. Try to meet on a regular basis for coffee, lunch or weekend outings. Having someone listen to your fears or frustrations helps. They may draw from their own experiences to provide useful suggestions and it will be comforting to have someone listen and validate your issues.

Use stress management techniques - Meditation, yoga and tai chi all offer ways to offload stress and relax. The mind and the body can benefit from regular sessions that may lift your spirits and help you regain your perspective.

Avoid alcohol and drugs - When you are anxious, excessive drinking or use of drugs will tend to accelerate the problem. Stick to moderate drinking and avoid recreational drugs. If you need help, look for a local support group.

Cut back on caffeine and don't smoke - Smoking and heavy doses of caffeine tend to create more anxiety.

Turn to art or music - Paint, sketch or doodle or let your favorite tunes express your emotions and lift your spirits.

Make rest a priority - Make your bedroom a sleep retreat and establish a regular bedtime to ensure that you get 7-9 hours of uninterrupted sleep every night. A good night's rest can do a lot to help you calm down and feel less anxious.

Eat healthy and dine with friends or family - Fresh fruits and vegetables and evening dinners can be a good backup as you work to regain your balance. Turn off the electronics and turn up the music as you enjoy time spent with loved ones.

If stress and anxiety persist in spite of your efforts, see your doctor and request a therapist or counselor to help you work through the issues.
