Turning Everyday Tasks into Exercise
By Rachel Shouse
There are a lot of people who avoid exercise because they don't feel like they have enough time to devote to another activity. Exercise doesn't have to be a 5K marathon. It can be anything that gets your heart rate up. Simple things that you do during the day can be turned into exercise. There are things that you do at home, and while you're out, that can be turned into exercise.
What You Can Change Into Exercise at Home
There are plenty of chores to get done in every home. There's always something that needs to be done. A lot of what you do can be modified into exercise. If you have stairs, walk up and down them a couple more times per day. If you're able to do it carefully, try skipping one step to get a good workout for your legs.
Going up and down the stairs is great. There are other ways to get exercise at home though. Even when you're folding laundry you could walk around a little bit to get some extra steps in. Another idea is to do a squat with every item that you fold. Also try doing a squat whenever you lean over to put a dish in the dishwasher. All of these activities do add up throughout the day.
Turning Other Activities into Exercise
Everyone has heard about how they should take the stairs instead of the elevator, which is an excellent tip. There are some other things you could do as well. Something as simple as parking farther away in a parking lot can even yield a decent amount of extra steps. Don't shy away from involving your friends. Getting together for a weekly walk with your friends accomplishes two things at once. You get good exercise and you get some socializing in at the same time.
If you have kids, here are some good ones. The next time you take your kids to the park go and play with them. You know how long kids can go. It would really bump up your heart rate for a healthy amount of time. You could also make an outdoor game with your kids. Something as simple as organizing a low-key race would be great.
There really are so many ways to change everyday activities into something that could benefit your physical health somehow. Not only can you help yourself, but if you come up with a good idea, share it with your friends. Friends who share tips are the good ones.
