Make Vacations a Part of Your Life for Better Health
By Tom Herrin
In the effort to try to get ahead in a job or get a little more done, many people choose to refrain from taking any days off. It may not be that they prefer to work all of the time, but it simply turns out that way. For many, the American way is to work as much as possible in hopes of saving up days for later. The bad thing is that later may never arrive. Too many times, people have put off all of their vacation for later only to suffer from some issue that robs them of the ability to ever take that time off and really enjoy it.
Vacations May Improve Sleep
It is pretty common for people to experience problems with sleep today. So many people work shifts in which their sleep schedule must change often. In addition, the amount of electronic devices used can create problems of their own. Lights and sounds that may be generated by the devices can disrupt sleep patterns. Studies have shown that people who take vacations can expect to be able to sleep longer and better well after they have returned from their vacation.
Vacations May Improve Mental Activity
Seeing new places and having new experiences can stimulate the brain. It may improve function and creativity. It works much like using muscles that have been complacent for quite a while. Apparently those who have a broad range of experiences are able to keep mental functions at a higher level. Even simple vacations can offer new experiences that may keep the mind sharper and sufficiently challenged.
Vacations Provide a Great Opportunity to Improve Relationships
In our family, we have found that traveling together creates a better opportunity for us to increase communication. In our normal daily routines, each of us can become lost in the tasks. When we spend more time together, we learn more about one another. Traveling and simply having fun can be a real break. We always seem to find something that can create lasting memories. These memorable activities alone can be a big part of that relationship bond. It is something that we can carry over to a time when we are back home and reflecting on good times we have had. Sometimes simply spending some time together can increase the trust that children can have for parents. We find that vacations are always time well spent.
