Does Thinking of Exercise in Winter Discourage You?
By Tom Herrin
Many people do things because of their desire to improve themselves. That is always a good thing. On the other hand, many people avoid doing things because of some thought of what kinds of challenges they fear. This can be true whether it is some kind of new undertaking or simply the idea of some different kinds of things they may have to overcome. As far as colder temperature workouts are concerned, some people try to pull back while others may choose to avoid them all together. It may be due to a lack of understanding of how to deal with the temps, or it may be due to some kinds of past experience.
Dress for the Environment
It can be a little tough when trying to decide exactly what to wear while working out in cooler temperatures. If they dress too warmly, they will be uncomfortable from the start. If they dress too cool, their body may never be able to get into a good rhythm due to its natural efforts to stay warm. Dressing in layers can work for exercise just as it does in anything else. People can wear layers that may be removed as they warm. Carrying a lightweight backpack can help if they are running or biking. It is generally best to start out slightly cool and adjust within the first few minutes.
Breathing Should Be Considered
When people are outside and breathe in cold air, it can be unpleasant. They may quickly find themselves with issues such as a runny nose or dry, sore throat. Wearing some kind of a mask or scarf over the face can help to warm the air as it is inhaled. This can support the body's natural defenses and prevent much of this discomfort.
Spend Time Warming Up
The idea of warming up before participating in some kind of exercise can serve several purposes. It can help to be certain that blood flow reaches all of the parts of the body, which can help to prevent injury to soft tissue. It can also help to raise the body temperature in those areas that are most vulnerable to such injuries. When it comes time to shift gears in your workout, think out your changes, and make them happen accordingly. Facing it with confidence can be a great help.
