Grease the Wheels for Exercise

By Tom Herrin

As with anything worthwhile, being prepared for whatever activity can be the best way of having the greatest success.  Failure to maintain an automobile is asking for trouble.  It will eventually catch up whomever has overlooked proper care.  The body is much the same way.  Trying to be physically active without making sure that things are in good working order may be asking for problems.  Too much wear and failure to take the right precautions is seldom good.  With some simple considerations, an exercise session may be successful.  The last thing anyone wants is to have an injury when they are attempting to attain personal improvement.

Remember the Importance of Water

Water is truly the basis of life.  In order for people to function as they should, they must have a constant supply of water.  Particularly when people are physically active, they should take in water on a constant basis.  Drinking throughout the day is a great habit to start.  This can help assure that the tissues have what they need.  Drinking throughout a workout, if possible, can help to replace that which is lost.  A person should also make certain to drink after they have finished.  Water not only helps to cool the body, it also helps to provide enough means for the blood to flow well.

Dress Well

It is just as important to dress appropriately for exercise as it is to go on a job interview.  There may only be one chance to do it right.  Wearing clothes that fit loose enough and allow good air flow can allow better cooling.  It can allow more flexible movement as well.  Obviously keeping in mind the temperature is important, too.  When it is hot, lightweight clothing should be the norm.  When it is cold, care must be taken to provide some warmth and yet avoid overheating.

Preparedness Is a Big Part of Success

I have failed often enough when I have tried to be prepared for a good workout.  At one time, I tended to fail to drink an adequate amount of water during my session.  This can really interfere with anyone's ability to achieve what they want.  I now try to drink more every chance I get.  Wearing the right clothes is always tricky, but I have found that when I work out more regularly, I can do a better job of judging what I need to wear.  When I miss long periods of time, especially in winter, I may misjudge what to wear.  The key for me is to stay on schedule.
