Thrive in Outdoor Workouts in the Cold
By Tom Herrin
Exercising can be tough until we get into a good routine. If we are doing it outdoors, the temperature and weather conditions can make it even more difficult. Working out in the cold can be done, but we really have to have a good plan. A few years ago, I made a decision that I would ride my bicycle just about every day. This meant that, if I was home, I would ride.
The only stipulation I added was that I would not do so if the temperature was below 30 degrees. Another problem I had to deal with was that I usually rode late in the evening. In the cold, the temperature was often dropping as I rode. This meant I had to do some careful planning so that I would be able to complete my hour ride. Anticipating how cold it would be to start and how fast I would warm up was a challenge. With technology we have today, it is possible to have layers that each has their individual role in our success.
The First Layer
We always have to start somewhere. The fist layer is the one that is closest to the body. It is suggested that it should be tight-fitting. No one wants to be wet, so it should wick away moisture. At the same time, it should allow air to flow. This can help us to stay dry and comfortable even as we perspire.
A Layer of Insulation
Anytime we think of heating and cooling, we have to consider insulation. As with most things, it is best if we have a thick layer that is bulky but lightweight. The insulating material needs to be able to have air spaces that help to buffer the air as it heats or cools so that is does so slowly. This layer also needs to allow for moisture to flow out of it.
A Durable Exterior
The outer layer acts much as the outer layer, or shell, on anything. It needs to be capable of protecting it from anything abrasive. It should protect against water and wind as well. It serves much the same purpose of a windbreaker in that it should be lightweight and allow air to flow through it. This should be a layer that may be removed if necessary, and it happens quite often.
