How to Boost Your Mood and Health at the Same Time

By Genevieve Cunningham

Most people experience bad moods and bad health from time to time. We all get in a bit of a funk in one way or another. We don’t feel like exercising, so our health suffers. We wake up on the wrong side of the bed, so our mood suffers. But what many don’t realize is that these two aspects of our being, our mood and our health, are actually connected. Sometimes when one suffers, the other suffers as well. Luckily, there are some things that we can do to tackle both of these problems at the same time. If you need a little boost in both health and mood, take a look at these tips to get you moving in the right direction.

Eat the Right Foods

Most people think of their diet as being connected to their health, but what goes into your mouth can also affect your mood and general demeanor. When you’re eating junk, you may feel sluggish, rundown, heavy, and generally unwell. This negatively affects your mood, leaving you feeling negative about life. If you improve your diet, filling it with plenty of veggies and lean meats and whole grains, you’ll likely see a boost in both your basic health as well as the way you feel about life.

Exercise Regularly

Exercise plays a significant role in the way that we feel, both physically and emotionally. Exercise produces certain chemicals in the body that make us feel happy. So by getting in some regular exercise, you’ll be automatically boosting your mood. And of course, exercise also helps you burn fat and build muscle. It also helps you build stamina and enhances lung function. Over time, exercise makes a significant and serious impact on health and wellness.

Have Some Alone Time

Everyone needs a little time to themselves. But not just alone time … time when you’re doing something that you enjoy. Time to unwind and engage in a hobby. Make sure that you’re getting at least a little bit of this kind of time to yourself weekly. In best case scenario, you’re getting this time daily, but take what you can get! A little time to do something you love and engage your brain makes for better moods, lower blood pressure, and less stress to affect your body overall.

You don’t have to live with bad health or bad moods. While both of these will strike from time to time, there are plenty of ways to boost both in one go. Use these tips to get started, and watch your health -- physical, mental, and emotional -- improve like never before.
